Chapter Eight

Rosa almost never got time off from work. Her bosses only grudgingly gave her leave for more than a weekend when someone died or she’d had dental surgery, but vacation wasn’t a language they spoke, and she needed every cent for rent most of the time. Things had gotten better since she’d swapped me out as roomie for her girlfriend, Amanda, who worked three jobs and made more money than I’d ever been able to contribute, but I was still surprised when Rosa called and announced she would be visiting.

“Clear your schedule, bitch! Auntie Rosa is hopping on a plane!” she crowed over the phone in lieu of a hello.

I sat up in bed, blinking to adjust to being suddenly awake. Ian wasn’t next to me; he’d already left for work. “What time is it?”

“Seriously?” She asked. “You haven’t seen me in person for a year, and that’s your reaction when I tell you I’m coming to stay?”

“Sorry, I’ve been sleeping a lot.” I rubbed my eyes and sat up. We were well past our safety window of telling people about the pregnancy, but we still hadn’t. I thought about telling her, right then, but decided that surprising her with the physical proof of the news would make her hilariously outraged.

“Living in a tropical paradise and sleeping a lot?” She groaned. “Stop bragging.”

“So, wait, what’s going on? You’re coming down here? You’re actually getting time off to come down here?” I sat up and snuck a look at my phone screen before she could answer. I’d slept until ten? I hadn’t done that in forever.

“I’m getting time off because the apartments above the office have bed bugs. The entire building has to be superheated or some shit. We’re cleaning stuff out today through Wednesday, and I don’t have to come back to work until Tuesday.”

“So, wait, they gave you Thursday, Friday, and Monday off?” If I looked outside, the sky would definitely be full of flying pigs. “They haven’t done that since—”

“Since Abuela died,” she finished for me. “So, brace yourself. I’m getting a plane ticket and coming down there.”

“No, I’m getting you a plane ticket.” I’d already promised her I would, a long time ago. “Tell me how much you need, and I’ll PayPal you some money.”

I didn’t have a lot of time to prepare for a visit. Once we got Rosa’s ticket settled—and I told Ian we’d be having a guest—I cleaned the house like we would be performing surgery in it.

“You’ll probably be so busy showing her around that she won’t have a chance to inspect the grout,” Ian said wryly on Thursday morning as I scrubbed between the master bath’s shower tiles with a toothbrush. He was a little put out at having to use the one in the guest bathroom.

“I know,” I snapped, and sat back on my heels. “It’s not just Rosa coming. I’m nesting, and since there’s nothing to really prepare for here, cleaning is my only outlet. Have you figured out a moving date, yet?”

“Not yet, no.
